12A: Figuring Out Buyer Behavior No. 1

Interview #1:
The first person I interviewed is a college student in her last year. This student said she has the most need of using alternatives to plastic when she goes to a restaurant or cafe and there are only plastic cups and plastic straws. She has metal straws at home and mason jars that she likes to bring with her but sometimes forgets. She becomes aware of the need when she is shopping for tupperware or water bottles. She also becomes aware of the need when ordering food to go from restaurants. She tries to eat out less or bring her own glass storage containers. When she searches in Google, she looks for alternatives to plastic that she can buy and use. For example, she started using bar soap instead of body wash. She does talk to her friends about using less plastic and most of them do use reusable water bottles.

Interview #2:
The second person I interviewed is a college student in her first year. She always has a need to use alternatives to plastic because she really cares about the environment. Her need becomes most salient when she goes out to eat with her friends and the restaurant only has plastic silverware and plastic cups. She eats out as less as she can and cooks her food at home. Her solution has been to replace a plastic product that she has every week. So far it has been working and she is almost plastic free. Of course, she said, there are some plastic products that she cannot replace such as a the plastic screen protector for her phone and computer. She said she is always on Google, trying to find alternatives to plastic and she just found a phone case called the Plea Case. She does talk to her family and friends about alternatives to plastic.

Interview #3:
The third person I interviewed is a junior in college. This student works at a restaurant so she is always seeing the need. She said when she brings drinks to a table, she asks her customers first if they want a straw or not to give them that opportunity to not use a straw. She also has an unmet need when she is ordering to-go food at a restaurant because most restaurants use plastic to-go containers. Once she becomes aware of the need, she tries to talk to people and inform them about alternatives to plastic and she tries to find a solution such as always carrying her own metal straws and only shopping at organic grocery stores that use paper bags. She said she hasn't searched on Google that much because she already uses alternatives to plastic and knows the different alternatives. She does talk to her friends and family as well.

Conclusion:
In conclusion, after interviewing these three college students, I noticed that they all have an unmet need to using alternatives to plastic. They all have an unmet need when shopping at the grocery store or eating at restaurants. They also all try to use alternatives to plastic, but there are so many things that plastic is stored in or used for that it is hard to completely get rid of plastic. Two of the people I interviewed said the do search for information, while one of them said she does not. After mentioning to all of them my idea of marketing and selling products with their college logo on it, they said they would all buy it.

  1. Assignment well done! Each interview is developed to its fullest. What I found interesting is your conclusion. You say that one of the people you interviewed does not look for informations. I had the same case in my own interview where multiple people said they do not do extra research to fix their problems. These people are most likely the hardest to reach out for your project but I am sure that you can do it .

  2. Hi Monica! I understand with your interviewees' explanations that sometimes plastic can be hard to avoid. Plastic is often the cheapest and easiest option for different items such as storage containers and people do not always think twice before buying things. I do think that it is a great idea to add various college logos to items as people value school pride and like to show off their school in a fashionable way.
