Assignment 5A: Identifying Local Opportunities

Description of story: UF is changing the graduation ceremony for December 2018 graduates. Instead of one huge ceremony with the entire student body, there will be two ceremonies. The first ceremony will be a general ceremony for everyone but no one's name will be called individually. The second ceremony will be smaller for students based on their college.
Problem: The problem is that UF students all want to graduate together and walk across the stage in front of the entire graduating class.
People: UF students, families, teachers, alumni, friends.

Description of story: There is a city law that states that Airbnb rentals cannot be shorter than 30 days. Miami Beach has consequences if anyone breaks those rules. Consequences include jail time. However, you can rent your property for short-term if you obtain a license.
Problem: The problem is that Miami Beach citizens cannot rent out to people from Airbnb for short-term. This is causing renters to lose business.
People: Miami Beach citizens, homeowners, Airbnb renters, tourists who want to travel to Miami Beach for short-term and can't rent from Airbnb for short-term stay.

3. "Roaches at an Outback. Cake by the rodent poop. These restaurants are in trouble" by David J. Neal of Miami Herald

Description of story: There have been some inspections done at some restaurants in South Florida and there have been findings of roaches, dead and alive, inside the kitchen of these restaurants. Due to these disturbing findings, these restaurants have been shut down for health reasons.
Problem: Restaurants owners and workers are not keeping their restaurants clean, which causes roaches to appear and live inside these restaurants. Restaurants are getting shut down and they are losing their businesses.
People: Restaurant owner, customers, employers, and managers.

Description of story: Underage teens are smoking e-cigarettes in high school and Miami Beach High School is not happy about it. Most teens are buying online so they do not have to prove that they are over 18. There are new rules being proposed in Miami that does not allow the sale of e-cigarettes to minors and requires proof of age for online stores. There will be consequences for anyone who breaks the law.
Problem: The problem is that teens are smoking under the age of 18 illegally and schools are trying to fix the problem. The problem is that retailers are selling to minors with no proof of identification.
People: Students, teachers, retailers, salespeople, and school administration.

5. "Apple recalls an iPhone model that might turn on, might not turn on, or freeze up" by David J. Neal of Miami Herald

Description of story: There has been a malfunction with the iPhone 8 and Apple had to recall it. You can check online by entering your serial number to see if its defected. If it is, then you can get it repaired for free.
Problem: The problem is that the iPhone 8 was not created properly and therefore is malfunctioning. The other problem is that Apple has to recall the iPhone and could lose some customers.
People: people with iPhone 8, Apple company, anyone who was looking to buy an iPhone 8, and Apple store employees.

  1. Great article! We can see that you did put time and effort in order to produce this work. The articles were very interesting, especially the first one. I hope they are going to change the graduation ceremony. We have been working so hard and for so long, I hope the administration is going to come back on their surprising decision. Nothing else to add, great job!
