30A: Final Reflection

1. Recall experiences along the way: some highs that I had were creating my business idea. I was happy creating it and interviewing my friends and family and getting their support for my idea. Even though this was a class project, people saw that this business idea would work. I also enjoyed doing the elevator pitches because it helped me with my memorization skills and it was great practice for job interviews. I also enjoyed the reading reflection assignments. I enjoy reading and being able to choose 3 books from a list was nice. I didn't really have that many lows. The assignments were varied and fun to do. The only thing I can think of some of the assignments were time consuming but planning out when you're going to do them really helped.

2. What sticks out to you the most: What stuck out to me the most and what I would remember for years down the line is the interviews. The interviews allowed me to explore my idea even more and get great feedback from people. Some people gave me great ideas and others supported my decision. This is very important when planning a business, especially when your friends and family support your idea.

3. Do you see yourself as an entrepreneur: I do see myself as an entrepreneur after taking this class even more because I've always wanted to be an entrepreneur. After creating a business plan in this class, I feel like I can create any business plan that I am passionate about. I even helped my boyfriend create his business plan outside of this class. The assignments and lectures gave me a lot of insight in what needs to be done in a business plan and how to be successful.

4. Recommendation for next years students: For next years students I recommend creating a business plan that you are passionate about. You will actually be interested in this class more because it could actually jumpstart your business. I also recommend making a schedule for this class and getting the assignments and lectures completed early so you don't have to rush. There are interviews that are required and those take time and planning.

29A: Venture Concept No. 2

Opportunity:
Everyone has an unmet need for alternatives to plastic. Out of all of the people I interviewed, everyone said they had an unmet need for alternatives to plastic. Most grocery stores use plastic, but do have the option of paper bags. If you do research on plastic, you'll find that it can take over a thousand years to decompose. My target audience is mainly college students but I am expanding it to college alumni as well. College alumni enjoy buying products with college logos on them and they do have more discretionary income to spend on nonessential items. College students are on a budget and I want to sell reusable products that are reasonably priced. College students are a great target market for my product because they show their school spirit being decked out in college gear.

The environment is harmed by the effects of plastic and is damaging our Earth. There is so much plastic in the ocean that animals are mistaking it for food. Plastic also cause health problems for humans because there are toxic chemicals in the plastic that leaches into our bodies which can cause serious health problems. I know a few people who are using alternatives to plastic and they are loyal customers. This is a huge opportunity because plastic is being banned in some states now and soon there won't be any more plastic (hopefully). I believe the "window of opportunity" will be open for years down the line. Plastic has harmed our Earth and oceans for a long time and I believe we can eventually get rid of plastic to save our planet.

Innovation:
The products that I am going to sell are reusable products such as reusable water bottles, reusable grocery bags, and metal straws with college logos on them. Each product will be priced differently based on what the product is. Reusable water bottles will run for $7, reusable grocery bags for $5 and metal straws for $3. I believe these are reasonable prices and since they are reusable they will last a long time. They will also have the universities logo on them so that is a way I can have college students promote for me. Of course, I will also have my company's logo on each product. If these three products are successful, I will create new products with college logos on them. I will sell my product bookstores as well on college campuses so that when families come to visit or alumni they can buy it.

Venture Concept:
My idea is creating an organization on college campuses that will sell reusable products instead of plastic with college logos on them. I believe customers will buy my product because it is priced reasonably and it is in an easily accessible location for my target audience. I believe customers would switch from plastic to my products because they are unique and they are eye-catching. I don't think it will be too hard to get them to switch after I tell them the negative effects of using plastic. I don't believe there are any competitors right now on campus. There are competitors who sell reusable water bottles and reusable grocery bags with college logos on them, but I have the advantage of selling on college campuses. I am planning on expanding my market to college alumni and selling on campus bookstores as well.

I plan on advertising on social media on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter. Social media is a great way to advertise since most people have social media. It is a quick way to get the message out there. The key is being consistent with your posts and letting people know what the deal is.

Regarding packaging, my products will be packaged in cardboard boxes in bulk. I will not individually package these products because I don't think there is a need. My products will be displayed at booths on all college campuses and will be sold to college students. Once I get a hang of that, I will expand my target market to college alumni and families. My target audience would expand, and I would be able to raise my prices because I would be targeting older people with higher income and discretionary income to spend on nonessential things.

If I were to start this business, I would travel to different college campuses to promote my product. Then, I would start hiring and training people so that they could promote and sell my product for me. I would also need someone in charge of inventory and storage. Eventually, I would want to open up my own office and start a marketing and training program that would prepare people for success in the field. Employees would have the role of selling, marketing, and attending meetings.

Three Minor Elements:
1. My most important resource will be my expertise in sales. I have expertise in sales that will help me kickstart this company. I know how to sell to people successfully and I believe that is key in this business plan.
2. What's next for my venture is actually implementing my plan and getting in one of the college campuses to start my business. Once I do that, I want to start hiring and training.
3. In five years, I want to have my own office and have expanded to at least 20 college campuses. In 10 years, I want to have expanded to 50 college campuses. I want to be the CEO of my company and train other people to be successful like me. I will eventually retire and pass on the business to someone else.

Feedback from What's Next: Someone said I'm going to need to advertise a lot to reach college students so I added that to my venture concept and talked about the social media that I would use. Someone else said I should market to alumni and college fans because they would be a good target market so I added that. Someone said the target market of older people would be good because they could spread the word to their kids and I also agree with that. Someone said I should expand my product line, which I also will do.

Feedback from Venture Concept No. 2: I received mostly positive feedback of my business idea and someone said they could see my business expand to recycling but I haven't thought into that yet.

What I changed: I changed a few things. I added alumni and families to my target market, which would allow me to expand my product line and sell more. I also got rid of selling at sports bars because I think that is a totally different concept. I added where I would be selling, such as at bookstores. I would still sell on college campuses to college students.

28A: Your Exit Strategy

1. This is a difficult decision to make based on the fact that I haven't started this business. I would have to base it on profit. But, if I had to choose, I would sell it in the next 5 years or so.

2. The reason why I would probably sell it in the next 5 years is because I want to eventually start a family and this business would require me to travel to different college campuses around the United States. I would want to start another business locally. Not sure what yet, but I do want it to be another type of business than what I created for this class. There is a lot of potential with selling plastic alternatives, but I would want to sell another product.

3. My exit strategy has influenced me to think about the future of my business idea. If I'm planning on selling it, I have to make sure it succeeds so the next person will want to invest in it. My exit strategy has also influenced me to expand my product line and potentially target a new segment of people.

27A: Reading Reflection No. 3

1. The last book I read for this class is called "How to Fail at Almost Everything and Still Win Big" by Scott Adams. The general theme of this book was how to be successful even after failing many times. Adam gave some great advice based on his experiences. His main thing was using systems and not setting goals. A system is how you get to your goal and if you don't have a system, you will not achieve your goals. Having good habits such as eating right and exercising and having energy were his main focus.

2. The book connected with me and enhanced my learning in this class because I one day want to be an entrepreneur. There will be plenty of times when I fail, and I just have to keep going and gain skills from each job and use it to my advantage. Adam was also big on affirmations. He believed if he told himself he would do something or achieve something, that it would happen. He also was big on luck. He thinks everything happens at the right moment. I believe if the moment is right, something good will happen.

3. If I had to design an exercise for this class, the exercise would be to write down all of your skills and how each one has helped you in something. Adam talks a lot about skills and which ones are important. Some of the skills he mentioned were speaking skills, design skills, accounting skills, and conversation skills. Being good at many skills is better than being great at one according to Adam. I agree with him.

4. My biggest surprise was when Adam said he couldn't speak for three years. In the beginning when I was reading the book, I would have never guessed that because he seemed like a social person. He was, but one day he couldn't speak and he didn't know why. He saw a lot of doctors and eventually found a cure for his spasmodic dysphonia. He went through a long recovery that was not guaranteed and recovered well and was able to speak again.

26A: Celebrating Failure

1. A time I failed this semester was when I applied for a job at a big company and did not get an interview. I put a lot of effort in my application and my referral. I got an informational interview before the job application was open but after I applied, I did not get a call back.

2. I learned from this experience that being prepared for anything is key. I also learned that there will be times when I won't be the best candidate for a job and that I should not give up looking. I actually applied for a job while I was applying for this one and got the job. You never know what opportunities will show up until you try.

3. I think failure is something that everyone experiences and learns from. Failure means you didn't try your best or you weren't the best fit. Failing should teach someone that they need to work on something in order to be successful next time. I handle failure by thinking about the bright side and knowing that it's not the end of the world. I like to go on a run and release any anger and move on. I am more likely to take more risks now. This was my first "real job" that applied for and I will keep trying.

25A: What's Next?

Existing Market:
1. What's Next: I want to expand my product line to five products instead of three.
2. I interviewed three customers who are already part of the market for alternatives to plastic. I told all three customers about my business plan and what they think I should do next. The first person I interviewed told me to stick with three products first and have a test run and in a couple months expand my product line. She told me to do this so that I don't get to overwhelmed in the beginning. The second person I interviewed liked my idea and told me to expand my market even more. She thinks there is another target audience out there such as families. She said children should grow up learning about saving the environment. The third person I interviewed also liked my idea and told me to get my products in stores. He said that would help with brand awareness and really getting my product out there.
3. Based on the feedback I got from these interviews, what makes the most sense to me is sticking with my idea of marketing on college campuses but I would also consider getting my product in stores.

New Market:
1. Currently I am targeting college students on college campuses. The new market that I would target is older adults between the ages of 25-50 at sports bars. I think this would be a good idea because I would be selling products with college logos on them.
2. I would create a value for this new market because usually people who go to sports bars watch college football and I think they would be interested in buying my product with their college logo on them.
3. I interviewed two people from this new market. I recently went to a sports bar and interviewed two people there. The first person was in his late 20s and told me that selling products at sports bars is a great idea. He said he's seen people do that before and people were buying them. The second person I interviewed was in her 40s. She loved my idea and said men who bring their wives to watch football would love the distraction and would definitely want to buy my products.
4. Overall, I knew about this potential market, and I like the idea. I want to continue working on my current target market and see where that goes. If I do not see the results I want, I will consider trying a new market.

24A: Venture Concept No. 1

I feel like a lot of people are either uneducated about the negative effects of plastic or just don't care about the environment. College students are on a budget and I want to sell reusable products that are reasonably priced. Plastic is so cheap, but it harms our environment. College students are always thinking of new ways to help our environment that's why I believe this is a great opportunity. My market is defined geographically all over the United States on college campuses. College students are between the ages of 18-25, male or female, some discretionary income, and enjoy socializing, exercising, and binging on Netflix.

Venture Concept:
My idea of an organization on college campuses that will promote alternatives to plastic and sell them too with college logos on them addresses the opportunity of decreasing the use of plastic and increasing the use of alternatives to plastic. I believe customers will buy my product because it is priced reasonably and it is in an easily accessible location for my target audience. I believe customers would switch from plastic to my products because they are unique and they are eye-catching. I don't think it will be too hard to get them to switch after I tell them the negative effects of using plastic. Some people are uneducated about the negative effects on plastic on human health and our environment, that once they know, they will be interested in buying. I don't believe there are any competitors right now on campus. There are competitors who sell reusable water bottles and reusable grocery bags with college logos on them, but I have the advantage of selling on college campuses. If I do decide to expand outside of college campuses, then I will have more competition, but I will have more expertise in the market.

Regarding packaging, my products will be packaged in cardboard boxes in bulk. I will not individually package these products because I don't think there is a need. My products will be displayed at booths on all college campuses and will be sold to college students. If I see an opportunity to expand outside of college campuses, I will begin selling them to sports bars. I was recently at a sports bar and someone came in and sold reusable bottles with college logos on them and the customers were ecstatic and were buying them up. If I were to sell to sports bars, I would raise my prices to $10 for a reusable water bottle, $7 for reusable grocery bags, and metal straws I would keep the same at $3.

23A: Your Venture's Unfair Advantage

1. I am highly organized, hard-working, and determined. If I set my mind to something, I will achieve it.
This resource is valuable because it is my character and not just anyone can create an idea and execute it. This resource is rare because I am a unique person with different quirks. This resource is inimitable because no one knows my tricks for achieving things. This resource is non-substitutable because I am the only one who has these characteristics.
2. I have connections from work that will help me succeed.
This resource is valuable because my boss started his own company from the bottom and would help me. This resource is rare because there are not a lot of business owners like my boss. This resource is inimitable because no one is like my boss. This resource is non-substitutable because although there are some owners out there like him, my boss is not substitutable.
3. Reusable products are pretty new and selling them with college logos on college campuses will target my audience perfectly.
This resource is valuable because college students are my target audience and selling on college campuses will help me to succeed. This resource is rare because there isn't a club on campus that does this. This resource can be copied only if someone steals my idea.
4. I have experience working at a start-up company.
I have the experience needed to start my own business. Anyone can get this knowledge, but who you get the knowledge from is rare. Everyone's way of doing something is unique so making sure you get the knowledge from the best, will be the most beneficial.
5. My family would help me financially.
My family supports my decisions and would help me with my business plan. My family is not substitutable and they are rare.
6. I have connections with the Human Resources director at my work who would help me.
The Human Resources director could help me with any questions I have whether about social media or supplies. She is in charge of a lot and has helped me in the past. She is valuable and no one is like her. She can't be copied or replaced because she knows so much about the company because she started there right when the company started and has worked ever since.
7. This business idea can attract not only college students, but older people as well.
College students can tell their friends and families and spread the word. This is valuable because it can increase business. Having college students spread the word is something that they would do out of compassion.
8. There is not a club on UF's campus that promotes reusable products and sells them.
This club that I created is different and has a lot of potential. There is not one like it already. It is valuable because I am trying to get more people to not use plastic to better our planet. It can be inimitable if someone thinks of my idea and it cannot be substitutable because it is my idea.
9. I have experience in sales.
I have expertise in sales from working at a company that has trained me to be the best. I am not substitutable, even though someone else can learn the same skills because I altered the pitch to see what works best for me. I am not inimitable because even though someone can copy what I do, everyone's personality is different and that's what gets the results.
10. I have a lot of family and friends who are helping me.
Not everyone gets help from their family and I am grateful to have. No one can substitute family and they can't be copied.

My top resource is my experience in sales. I have been the top sales manager at my job and that definitely separates me from a lot of people. I have trained and hired people and taught them how to be successful. This would help me in my business when I need to hire and train people.

22A: Elevator Pitch No. 3

https://youtu.be/Oj9TTyEMDvQ

Overall, I received positive feedback. Most people said I did a great job with being confident and having my pitch memorized. Everyone said I changed what I needed to and that it really showed a difference. From the last pitch, I received some feedback about adding in more statistics about plastic use and alternatives to plastic.

Based on the feedback, I continued to not use my arms and memorized my pitch. I also added in new statistics. I decided to be more enthusiastic as well because I seemed to be kind of bored. This has been a great practice experience and I enjoyed doing it.

21A: Reading Reflection No. 2

1. The second book I chose to read us called "The Art of Social Media," by Guy Kawasaki and Peg Fitzpatrick. The general theme of this book is to provide readers tips and tricks on how to use social media to benefit you or your business. Some of the topics discussed include customizing your profile, how to write posts, how to reply to comments, and how to get more followers.
2. This book connected with me and enhanced what I am learning in this class. In this class we are creating a business idea and some of us are executing it as well. This book provides great advice for how to use social media effectively to gain more followers. The key to gaining more followers according to Kawasaki, is sharing content. The more followers you have on social media, the more customers will come to your business.
3. If I had to design an exercise for this class, I would have students create a business profile on a social media platform of their choice for the business idea they are generating in this class.
4. My biggest surprise was when Kawasaki created a post on the new Audi A3 about some new feature and Audi dealers saw his post and reshared it and gained 500,000 views. Kawasaki said that resharing a post gains you more followers than not resharing it.

20A: Growing Your Social Capital

1. For my first interview, I talked to my boss. He knows how to market and sell products. He gave me great advice for selling products on college campuses. He told me that the key to selling is knowing your product and being indifferent when doing it. If you show indifference, the customer won't feel pressured to make a decision and will therefore buy the product if they "like it, like you, and think it's a good deal," according to my boss. My boss said he would even help me if I had any problems and questions about anything. He is a great guy and I am glad I got to tell him about my idea.

2. For my second interview, I talked to a person at a market who had their own business of getting the word out there to people about saving the Earth. This guy promotes his products at markets and sells reusable grocery bags that wrap up in a small ball and can be used for anything. He also had his company logo on them. I told him about my idea and he gave me some advice. He told me to not give up because there are always people who will tell you no. He explained his business model to me and how he started it and I believe it will benefit me if I do want to open up this business.

3. The third person I interviewed was my Human Resources director at my job. Katherine deals with inventory and supply for our products that we sell. I asked her who she gets the supplies from and if the company pays a percentage from the inventory that the company sells. She told me that they get the supplies directly from the vendors and they do have to pay them a percentage of the products that they sell. She gave me great advice on how to work with inventory and what to do if something is damaged. I learned a lot and will definitely use her advice.

Overall, I've had to network a lot for my job. I've called top business owners in the same business model to get advice from them. This networking experience was fun and I got some great advice for my business.

19A: Idea Napkin No. 2

1. You: I am a leader. I am the one who is in charge of group projects. I am also a leader at my company working in event marketing. I train and hire people based on my expertise in the field. I set the fastest record at my company to get promoted into leadership. My skills include time management, effective communication, and problem-solving. Specifically regarding my business concept, if I were to start it, it would play a huge role in my life. I really care about the environment and starting a club to raise awareness would be something I would enjoy doing.

2. What are you offering to customers?
I am offering to customers alternatives to plastic. Examples of alternatives to plastics include reusable water bottles, reusable shopping bags, metal straws, glass storage containers, and mason jars for to-go drinks. I am also offering alternatives to plastics such as reusable grocery bags with college logos on them.

3. Who are you offering it to?
I am offering alternatives to plastic to college students, mainly women. These women are between the ages of 18 and 25 and have middle income with discretionary income left to splurge on things they like. This is a typical college girl who cares about the environment and wants to make a difference in this world. This typical customer likes to shop, hang out with friends, go to the beach, and surf. I will be going around to restaurants to spread the word and get restaurants to buy metal straws from me to sell at their restaurant.

4. Why do they care?
People care about saving the environment. There are so many ways people can help and I feel like especially on college campuses people will care more because of greed factor. Greed factor is when someone sees someone else with a product that they think is cool and want it too. If one college student buys a water bottle with a college logo on it, people will want to buy that product too.

5. What are your core competencies?
My core competencies include my skills of running a business from my job experience. I understand what needs to be done in order to be successful. I also believe there is not a business out there like mine. Having reusable products with college logos on them is unique.

I did not receive any feedback regarding changing anything. The feedback I received was all positive regarding my experiences. I decided to change who I am offering to. After I created my avatar I was able to zone in one who my typical customer is. I also went into more detail on specific skills that I have.

17A: Elevator Pitch No. 2

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RdN9wOkVXQM&feature=youtu.be

The feedback that I received from my first elevator pitch was overall positive. There was one piece of advice that I definitely used. One person told me to not use my arms as much because it can create a distraction.

After receiving great feedback, I decided to memorize my pitch all of the way, which made me more confident in my idea. I also did not wave my arms around. Overall, I believe I improved and would love some more feedback how I can improve even more on my third elevator pitch.

18A: Create a Customer Avatar

The typical customer for my product is a college women in her 20's. This woman has medium income with some discretionary income to spend on nonessential things. Hobbies that my customer has include kayaking, swimming, and running. This customer tends to drive a Honda Accord. My customer likes to watch TV shows such as Friends, The Office, and Grey's Anatomy. This customer does not tend to have any children, but they do have a lot of friends and family. They tend to have a job with going to school full-time. They do not have much time to read books for leisure because they reading books for school is number one priority.
After creating this avatar, I would have to say that I have a lot in common with her. I am a college student in my 20's, working part-time, have similar hobbies, and watch similar shows. I do not think it is a coincidence because I am targeting college students with the same unmet need as me.

15A: Figuring Out Buyer Behavior No. 2

Interview 1: The first college student that I interviewed is a freshman in college. She said when she goes shopping for clothing or shoes, she prefers to buy at the store. She said she does not like to buy online because she cannot see or feel the product beforehand and would not know if it would fit/ work. She said what matters to her the most when buying a product is the price, since she is a college student who is budgeting her costs. I told her about alternatives to plastic and she said she already buys them at the store. She did say she bought metal straws on Amazon because she found a good deal online and she couldn't find any in stores. She shops online frequently for little things like phone cases. I asked her how she makes sure that her purchase was a good idea after she buys something, and she said she usually looks up reviews online for products so she knows it will be worth it.

Interview 2: The second college student I interviewed is a junior in college. He said he rarely shops, but when he does, he shops in stores. He likes to go in the store and buy what he needs and leave as fast as he can. He said he does not like to buy online because he would rather buy something and have it the same day. He said quality matters to him the most when shopping. He tends to buy high end products because he does have a job and extra money to spend. Since he does not shop frequently, he has more money saved up. I told him about the alternatives to plastic and he said he does not currently buy any. I told him about the different alternatives and he said if they were priced at a good price, he would consider buying them. I asked him how he makes sure that after he purchases a product, that he would not regret it after and he said he makes sure he actually likes it and is going to use it.

Interview 3: The third college student that I interviewed is a junior in college. This student said she buys in stores and online. She buys her clothing and shoes in stores, but online she likes to buy small things like books, watch bands, and laptop cases. She said what matters to her the most when buying products is the price. She is on her own, without the help of her parents, so she is on a tight budget. I told her about the alternatives to plastic and she said she has bought some already. She bought these alternatives such as reusable straws and reusable bags online because the price was affordable and it was convenient to buy online. She said some of the alternatives that she wants, she can only find online. For example, she wanted these reusable bags that were wrapped in a pouch for easy storage and she found them online. I asked her how she decides that the product she buys is a good idea and she said she looks up reviews before buying.

Overall, the three college students that I interviewed, 2 out of 3 said they already buy alternatives to plastic and the other one said they would if it was a good price. Price is the most important factor to most college students because they are usually on a small budget. Regarding, post-purchase evaluation, most of my interviewees said they look up reviews online before buying a product.

14A: Halfway Reflection

The behaviors that I have used to keep up with the requirements for this course is by setting goals and achieving them. For example, I set daily and weekly goals of when and how I am going to study for my classes. I write down what I have due and check it off as I go. For this course, you have to declare every assignment and submit URL's. There is a lot to keep track, especially with five classes and work, but it is manageable. You just have to have good time management skills.

I actually just recently had a moment of "giving up" because I started this new job while taking five classes. Since it is midterm week, I have been stressing more about school. My new job requires training people, attending meetings, attending business dinners, attending goal/team night, networking with people, working in the office and in the field, so it can be stressful, but I have set my expectations of when I can work, so it has been working out pretty well with school. I do have less time for a social life, but I try to have as much fun as I can as often as I can. My family even told me to quit my job, but I am not a quitter, and I will pull through.

I feel like I definitely developed a tenacious attitude during the past two months because of being able to handle five classes on top of work. I have learned a lot while working and staying in school and it has taught me how to manage my time and what my priorities are. I have worked in the past during school, but it was a job in the restaurant industry that I did not envision myself in. I wanted to start my career before I graduated, so that I could execute my student mentality and work ethic in my job.

Three tips that I would give students for next year's class include being prepared, being on time, and having a positive attitude. If you maintain these three things, you can accomplish your goals and all of your assignments on time. Being prepared means studying and knowing your stuff and bringing your notebook and pencils to class. Being on time means being early. If you are late, you will miss important class information. Having a positive attitude is another tip that will go a long way. If you think optimistically, you can set your mind to anything, achieve your goals, and be successful.

13A: Reading Reflection No. 1

The book that I chose for my reading reflection is "Grinding It Out," by Ray Kroc. What surprised me the most was how Ray Kroc was able to open his own McDonalds after making a deal with the McDonald's brothers. Supposedly anyone can open a McDonald's today, but first they need to work in a McDonald's for a certain amount of hours to be able to open up their own franchise. Ray Kroc opened up his first McDonald's at age 52. He expanded so quickly to 4,000 locations in just around 20 years. It is amazing how he did it. In the book, he talks about how he chose his locations and he used his company airplane in the beginning. I thought that was a smart idea!

What I admired the most about Ray Kroc is that he had many jobs in his life and he never gave up. He was always the hardest worker and the one at the top in his business. He first began selling paper cups and was the best sales agent and then he moved to selling Multimixers. He wanted to sell Multimixers to McDonalds, but instead he got the idea of opening McDonalds locations himself across the U.S. and made a deal with the McDonald's brothers. He still brought his Multimixers to McDonalds to increase more sales.

After reading the entire book, Ray Kroc said himself that he judged people before getting to know them. Once he was in his business, he had to hire people to help him, and he said he always judged men that he was interviewing. He was looking for sharp people, so I can see why he did that. But, judging someone before you actually get to work with them, won't do you any good. That is what I least admired about him.

Ray Kroc did encounter failure. When he first opened his McDonald's, he had a hard time making fries like how they should taste. He failed a few times, but kept trying and finally made them just right. He said it took him a year to get his first McDonald's up and running perfect, so he had to go through a lot of bumps, but he never gave up.

Some competencies that I noticed that the entrepreneur exhibited included always trying his hardest to succeed. Every job that he had, he always managed to get to the top of the ladder. He worked long hours and worked with tenacity.

I was not confused by any of the reading. Everything was straightforward and easy to understand.

The two questions that I would ask Ray Kroc:
1. What made you want to open a McDonald's location?
2. What would you have done differently in your life?

I think Ray Kroc's opinion of hard work was giving your all and being your best. Kroc thought hard work meant achieving the best results by putting in the effort. You have to do what it takes to succeed. I do believe he is right and I do always try my best when doing anything in life. Ray Kroc taught me a lot and I hope one day I will be as successful as he was.

12A: Figuring Out Buyer Behavior No. 1

Interview #1:
The first person I interviewed is a college student in her last year. This student said she has the most need of using alternatives to plastic when she goes to a restaurant or cafe and there are only plastic cups and plastic straws. She has metal straws at home and mason jars that she likes to bring with her but sometimes forgets. She becomes aware of the need when she is shopping for tupperware or water bottles. She also becomes aware of the need when ordering food to go from restaurants. She tries to eat out less or bring her own glass storage containers. When she searches in Google, she looks for alternatives to plastic that she can buy and use. For example, she started using bar soap instead of body wash. She does talk to her friends about using less plastic and most of them do use reusable water bottles.

Interview #2:
The second person I interviewed is a college student in her first year. She always has a need to use alternatives to plastic because she really cares about the environment. Her need becomes most salient when she goes out to eat with her friends and the restaurant only has plastic silverware and plastic cups. She eats out as less as she can and cooks her food at home. Her solution has been to replace a plastic product that she has every week. So far it has been working and she is almost plastic free. Of course, she said, there are some plastic products that she cannot replace such as a the plastic screen protector for her phone and computer. She said she is always on Google, trying to find alternatives to plastic and she just found a phone case called the Plea Case. She does talk to her family and friends about alternatives to plastic.

Interview #3:
The third person I interviewed is a junior in college. This student works at a restaurant so she is always seeing the need. She said when she brings drinks to a table, she asks her customers first if they want a straw or not to give them that opportunity to not use a straw. She also has an unmet need when she is ordering to-go food at a restaurant because most restaurants use plastic to-go containers. Once she becomes aware of the need, she tries to talk to people and inform them about alternatives to plastic and she tries to find a solution such as always carrying her own metal straws and only shopping at organic grocery stores that use paper bags. She said she hasn't searched on Google that much because she already uses alternatives to plastic and knows the different alternatives. She does talk to her friends and family as well.

Conclusion:
In conclusion, after interviewing these three college students, I noticed that they all have an unmet need to using alternatives to plastic. They all have an unmet need when shopping at the grocery store or eating at restaurants. They also all try to use alternatives to plastic, but there are so many things that plastic is stored in or used for that it is hard to completely get rid of plastic. Two of the people I interviewed said the do search for information, while one of them said she does not. After mentioning to all of them my idea of marketing and selling products with their college logo on it, they said they would all buy it.

11A: Idea Napkin No. 1

1. You: I am a team leader in school and at work. I have been a team leader on all my group projects and I can communicate effectively to my peers and motivate them to finish all of their work before the deadline. I am in a leadership position at my company in Clearwater, FL where I interview and train people in the field and outside of the field. I work in event marketing so we hire people with a student mentality and an open mind. We train them to become leaders in the office so they can eventually run multiple marketing events. My aspirations include opening up my own event marketing office with a wide range of clients. Regarding this class, if I started a business of marketing  alternatives to plastic, such as reusable water bottles and reusable grocery bags, with a UF logo on them, I would promote them on UF's campus and then expand to other college campuses worldwide.

2. What are you offering to customers?
I am offering to customers alternatives to plastic such as reusable water bottles, reusable grocery bags, bar soap and shampoo, metal straws, hair and skin products in reusable containers, and glass storage containers for food. All of the things that can replace one time use plastics is not something that everyone pays attention to.

3. Who are you offering it to?
I am offering alternatives to plastics to college students. Demographics include between the ages of 18 and 25, some disposable income, and females and males. Psychographics include wanting to try new things and experience them. I believe college students can be the change that our world needs today. I am also offering alternatives to plastic to restaurants, cafes, and grocery stores. If restaurants, cafes, and grocery stores can provide alternatives to plastic, there will be more people who will use them.

4. Why do they care?
I believe customers will care about my products because they are environmentally friendly and will not produce any plastic waste. This is a product that will have UF logos on them so college students will be excited to buy them and rep their school.

5. What are your core competencies?
Based on attending UF and researching about the sustainability clubs on campus, I do not think there is anyone out there with my idea. My core competencies include marketing skills that will help my business succeed. What I have that nobody else has is having alternatives to plastic with UF logos on them. Even placing "UF" letters on products will separate me from my competition.

I believe these elements fit together well because there are a lot of people with an unmet need. People want to better our environment and not leaving traces of plastic that can hurt our planet, people, and animals, will only incentivize people to use alternatives to plastic. The only thing that would stop people from buying is if they do not care or have a passion for helping our planet or if they do not have the extra money to spend because alternatives to plastic are more expensive than plastic.

10 A: Elevator Pitch #1

9A: Testing the Hypothesis, Part 2

I interviewed five people and found that all of them are using plastic regularly. All of these people that I interviewed have an unmet need for alternatives to plastic. After speaking to these people, I noticed that they do not have the knowledge about some alternatives to plastic and if they do they do not care for using them. Some people said the alternatives to plastic are expensive and they do not want to change their products because they don't see a direct impact. Only one student out of the five said that she uses alternatives to plastic frequently.

Who: The person who falls outside of the boundary would be people who use alternatives to plastic already. These people became educated about the negative impact of using plastic on the environment  and therefore wanted to try alternatives.

What: If you use less plastic, there is less of a need for using alternatives to plastic. Alternatives to plastic include products such as bar soap/ shampoo, skin care in glass containers, metal straws, and reusable water bottles. If you use less plastic, people will be drawn to you and want to talk to you and learn more about why you choose to not use plastic.

Why: People who are inside the boundary, such as people not using alternatives to plastic, are different from the people outside of the boundary. People who are inside the boundary have a need of using alternatives to plastic. People who are outside of the boundary, already use plastic alternatives or avoid using plastic in general.

Inside the Boundary:
  • Who is in: People not using alternatives to plastic
  • What the need is: an alternative to plastic
  • Why the need exists: to decrease the impact of plastic's effect on Earth

Outside the Boundary:
  • Who is not: People already using alternatives to plastic or people who avoid using plastic
  • What the need is not: not getting rid of plastic and not having an alternative to plastic
  • Alternative Explanations: Just because someone is already educated and uses alternatives to plastic to care enough about our world, does not mean that they would not be interested in the club.

8A: Solving the Problem

Opportunity: The opportunity is reducing the amount of plastic that people use everyday. There are many alternatives to plastic such as glass water bottles, metal straws, glass food storage, steel cutlery, cloth produce bags, metal hangers, and dryer balls. I think there is a huge opportunity to reduce plastic use and it starts with a single person.

Service: I want to create an organization on college campuses that will educate people about the alternatives to plastic. The organization will promote alternatives to plastic and hand out free metal straws for people to reuse. I think direct marketing to people is the smartest way to get people to try to reduce their plastic use one step at a time. This club could even sell glass water bottles with a UF logo on it and reusable produce bags with a UF logo. The club could have a social media page to bring awareness to more college students. I feel like college students are the ones who are willing to make a change in this world.

7A: Testing the Hypothesis, Part 1

Opportunity: There is an opportunity to reduce the amount of plastic use in the world. Plastic is used by millions of people everyday, mostly at restaurants. My goal is to educate people about the risks of using plastic and how to eventually cut out plastic from everyday use.

The Who: People in the world who use plastic
The What: Too much plastic in the ocean and too much plastic used for everyday things
The Why: Plastic is killing ocean life and it can cause health problems for people such as from the BPA levels in plastic. Also, food that is stored in plastic, the plastic seeps into the food, which can cause health problems such as cancer and hormone imbalance.

Testing The Who: Asking around people to see who uses plastic the most
Testing the What: Seeing how much plastic we use everyday
Testing the Why: Researching the negatives of using plastic

Interviews:
I interviewed five people. They included 5 college students. The college students were aware of the heavy use of plastic and they were already trying to use alternatives to plastic such as metal straws, glass containers for food, and glass water cups. One girl who is a server said she asks her customers if they want to use a straw or not. Another girl said she brings her own glass containers to a restaurant. The boy said he avoids using straws. The fourth person I interviewed said they would love to see more people cutting out plastic. The fifth person I interviewed wanted to reduce the amount of plastic they use but have not gotten to it yet. I told everyone that I interviewed about the new club idea on college campuses for spreading the word about plastic alternatives and selling college decked out products and everyone was very interested!

After interviewing these people, there is an opportunity to reduce the use of plastic in a college community. I want to create awareness through a college campus club so that people are aware of the different alternatives to plastic. People, on the individual level, can cut out plastics, one day at a time, to reduce the amount of plastic that they use. Some alternatives to plastic include metal hangers, metal straws, and cloth grocery bags.

Assignment 4A: Forming an Opportunity Brief

I believe there is an opportunity belief for reducing the amount of plastic that we use. Restaurants use plastic for to go containers and straws. After watching a documentary on Netflix on plastic in our ocean, I believe there is a strong opportunity belief for reducing the amount of plastic that we use. I believe there is a 90% chance that this need exists. There is so much plastic on the bottom of our oceans, that it is killing our sea creatures and our lands. I believe people are learning about this need today, but aren't doing much about it. The solution here is to encourage people not to use plastic. For example, when going to a restaurant, bring your own to-go containers made out of glass or carry around your own metal straws. You could also bring reusable bags when you go grocery shopping. A small difference will make a huge difference in the long-term.

The prototypical customer is a young individual who wants to make a change in the world. These are usually college students or graduate students.

Interview 1: Kristina, freshman in college
1. Do you ever use plastic?
No, I recently stopped using plastic.
2. When did you become aware of the need to reduce plastic?
A couple months ago.
3. Do you try to use alternatives to plastic?
Yes, I use metal straws, my own to-go containers, and my own glass cups.
4. Do you try to persuade your friends to not use plastic?
Yes, most of them don't care.
5. How satisfied are you with this solution?
Not so much. I keep finding plastic on the beach and in the ocean when I go surfing.

Reflection: After interviewing Kristina, I can tell she really cares about the environment and is doing her best to make a difference. She is aware of the need and uses alternatives to plastics as much as she can.

Interview 2: Toma, junior in college
1. Do you ever use plastic?
Yes, I use plastic as minimally as I can. I cut out single use cups and I never use straws.
2. When did you become aware of the need to reduce plastic?
I became conscious of plastic consumption from an early age of hating litterbugs. I always hated littering and then media broke of horrendous plastic pollution on Earth.
3. Do you try to use alternatives to plastic?
I use glass jars, a reusable customized steel tumbler, and paper bags when shopping at grocery stores.
4. Do you try to persuade your friends to not use plastic?
I constantly persuade people to use alternatives to plastic. As a waitress I am a strong advocate for "Skip the Straw."
5. How satisfied are you with this solution?
I am never fully satisfied because I constantly want to eliminate more waste.

Reflection: After interviewing Toma, I found out that she cares a lot about our environment and the trying to reduce the use of plastic. She persuaded her boyfriend to not use plastic straws!

Interview 3: Destin, senior in college
1. Do you ever use plastic?
Yes.
2. When did you become aware of the need to reduce plastic?
When the sea turtle had a straw through his nose!
3. Do you try to use alternatives to plastic?
I do when I can. I choose not to use a straw and I try to avoid pre-packaged foods and drinks that use it.
4. Do you try to persuade your friends to not use plastic?
Yes, through the powers of passive aggression.
5. How satisfied are you with this solution?
It'll get there eventually. Everything in time.

Reflection: After interviewing Destin, he has a hope for the future of reducing plastic use. He tried to use the least amount of plastic as much as he can and he tries to persuade his friends to not use it either!

After conducting these interviews, I believe this opportunity exists and people are trying to make a change. I would say there is more than 90% chance that this opportunity exists after interviewing these people. I think entrepreneurs should adapt customer feedback, but I do not think that should change much if you know that there is a problem out there.

Assignment 3A: Your Entrepreneurship Story

Both of my parents are entrepreneurs. They both started their own businesses when they moved down to FL over 25 years ago. My dad opened up his own restaurant then his own car lot. My mom is the owner of a logistics shipping company. I want to follow in their footsteps one day.

I led a group project in my media planning class last spring. I was the team leader and led discussions and managed the group. I divided the group up based on our skills. I taught the entire class how to use the Commspoint tool since no one took charge to get it early and practice.

I led a class in my Lithuanian community school every Sunday while I was in high school. I created lesson plans for the children between the ages of 4 and 7. I still participate in the Lithuanian community school as much as I can so I can give back to my community.

I enrolled in this class because I am interesting in being an entrepreneur one day. I want to start my own business in event planning! I'm interested in planning events for large parties and weddings!
